Navigating Your Drive
If you’re driving, your starting point is Calexico, California. Here are detailed instructions for various routes:
Driving Directions From San Diego (Interstate 8 East):
- Take Interstate 8 East to Highway 111 exit.
- Go South on Highway 111 to the border.
- Go through the border, bear right.
- After approximately 500 feet, turn right for San Felipe.
- Continue straight through Mexicali; follow signs for San Felipe.
- This road becomes Highway 5; stay on it until you reach San Felipe.
Driving Directions From Yuma, AZ (Interstate 8 West):
- Take Interstate 8 West to Highway 98 exit.
- Go West on Highway 98 for about 16 miles.
- At the traffic light, make a left and proceed to the border crossing.
- Once through, head to a “T” crossing, make a right along the border boundary.
- At the first stop sign, make a left onto Calzado Manuel Gomez Morin (MORIN BLVD).
- Continue South on MORIN through 7 traffic lights, passing the Sony plant.
- Turn left onto Highway 5 going South; San Felipe is about 2 – 2 1/2 hours away.
Driving Directions From Ensenada (Mexican 1-D to Mexican 3 South):
- Drive South on the Mexican 1-D to Ensenada.
- In Ensenada, take the Mexican 3 South to the Mexican 5.
- Head south on the Mexican 5; it directly leads to San Felipe.
- Be prepared for military checkpoints; notify them of your final destination.
- Beware of potholes on the notorious Mexican 3; it’s 150 miles from Ensenada to San Felipe.

Before You Cross the Border:
- Mexican Auto Insurance: Your US/Canadian policy is not valid in Mexico. It is legally required to have Mexican Liability Insurance. [Pro Tip: Getting this online before you drive saves time and is often cheaper.]
- Gas Up: Fill your tank in Calexico or San Diego. While there are gas stations along Highway 5, it’s best to start your Baja journey with a full tank.

On the Road (Highway 5):
- Daylight Driving: We strongly recommend driving during daylight hours to easily spot any livestock (cows) that might wander near the road.
- Military Checkpoints: You may encounter a military checkpoint. They are routine; just be polite, answer their questions, and allow them to do a quick inspection if asked.
- Road Conditions: Highway 5 from Mexicali to San Felipe is generally in excellent condition and is a fully paved, four-lane highway for most of the stretch.
